The Making of a Manager

The Making of a Manager: What to Do When Everyone Looks to you (Julie Zhuo) – Book Summary & Highlights

The crux of Management: It is the belief that a team of people can achieve more than a single person going at it alone. It is the realization that you don’t have to do everything yourself, be the best at everything yourself, or even know how to do everything yourself. Your job, as a manager, is to get better outcomes from a group of people working together. It’s from this simple definition that everything else flows.
THE ONE THING YOU SHOULDN’T TOLERATE ON YOUR TEAM: Stanford professor Robert I. Sutton described this phenomenon in his now-famous book The No Asshole Rule. He defines an asshole as someone who makes other people feel worse about themselves or who specifically targets people less powerful than him or her.
GIVING PEOPLE BIG PROBLEMS IS A SIGN OF TRUST –  It’s an error in assuming that nobody wants to take on hard problems. In fact, the most talented employees aren’t looking for special treatment or “easy” projects. They want to be challenged. There is no greater sign of trust than handing your report an intricately tangled knot that you believe she can pull apart, even if you’re not sure how.

Happiness Equation Book Summary

Happiness Equation (Neil Pasricha) – Book Summary & Highlights

There are only 3 Goals: To want nothing. That’s contentment. To do anything. That’s freedom. To have everything. That’s happiness.
Whenever you are starting a new goal or habit do not use  external motivators. You must be doing it for yourself and not for others. It’s hard to compete endlessly because there’s always more to compete with someone or something and there is always someone or something better out there.
How to make every decision at twice the speed? Remove choice, What’s the counterintuitive way to having more time? Remove time, How to add an hour to the day with only one small change? Remove access.

Leader

Tips for Cultivating future leaders

A great leader is someone who can serve both the short and long-term requirements of an organization. They have a short-term vision for the team and a long-term vision for the team members. I remember when one of my CIO took an opportunity outside the organization, she ensured that she spoke with her direct reports and ensured that the top talent had a good runway in place to grow in their career and during the transition phase ensured that the new CIO and the new portfolio owners know how important these top talents are to our organization.
